CANCER*

EARLY RESEARCH SUGGESTS POTENTIAL FOR ASPIRIN THERAPY

In addition to lowering the clotting ability of your blood, aspirin blocks an enzyme called COX-2. (28)  This enzyme is associated with both inflammation and cell growth. COX-2 has also been found to be elevated in precancerous tissues and tumors. (29) Consequently, aspirin may help to protect against certain types of cancer. Low strength daily aspirin therapy has been associated with lower death rates from a variety of cancers in areas including: (8)

  • Colon
  • Esophagus
  • Stomach
  • Breast
  • Lung
  • Prostate
  • Bladder
  • Ovaries

Aspirin products like Halfprin® — an enteric coated aspirin that is gentler on the stomach — have been studied for their ability to fight colorectal cancer. Because of its ability to block COX-2 enzymes, aspirin appears to reduce the incidence of colon tumors and polyps. The drug appears to keep abnormal tissue from growing. While the findings are preliminary, physician-directed daily low strength aspirin, along with its proven heart benefits, may help to reduce your risk of developing colon cancer by 4 to 19 percent. ALZHEIMER’S*

New Research about Aspirin and Alzheimer’s

Recent findings are suggestive that another added benefit of aspirin use may be a lower incidence of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia in people on an aspirin regimen for more than two years. Although scientists aren't certain why aspirin seems to help, one theory suggests that Alzheimer's may be a result of inflammation in the brain. Consequently, taking an anti-inflammatory drug regularly may prevent or slow the process of developing this form of dementia. Another theory suggests that a breakdown of proteins in the brain causes plaque buildup that disrupts brain activity. An anti-inflammatory drug may stop the process of the protein breakdown. (9)

*Aspirin therapy is not right for everyone. As with any medication, consult your doctor before beginning a daily aspirin regimen to assess the benefits and risks for your individual circumstances.
